I don’t know what it is about Meadow Brook Hall, but the magic seems to come alive when entering the home, once inhabited by Matilda Wilson Dodge and Alfred Wilson and their children.

It could be the intriguing history or the magnificant surroundings one encounters while in the 88,000 square foot mansion.  Whatever it may be, it will leave you wanting more!

You are invited to a swanky soiree at Meadow Brook Hall on March 19. Upon revealing the password, patrons will be granted access to the Speakeasy at a secret entrance that will be disclosed at the time of their reservation.

Patrons will partake in bootleg beverages and a 1920s inspired strolling dinner, while being entertained by the jazz group “Birds on Wire.” In keeping with the 1920s tradition, guests will also have the opportunity to get their palms or tarot cards read. Also included in the evening will be touring and a live performance of the famed flapper dance the Charleston.

A mini exhibit from the archives of Meadow Brook Hall will be on display that evening. Guests will also have an opportunity to learn about prohibition in Michigan and how it affected every level of society including the Dodge-Wilson family.

The evening begins at 7pm and runs until 10pm. Tickets are $65 per person and include dinner, drinks and entertainment. Reservations are required. The secret entrance and password will be revealed when you call 248-364-6263 to make your reservation. For more information on upcoming events at The Hall visit meadowbrookhall.org.

Dinner With Santa at Meadow Brook Hall

Meadow Brook Hall Holiday

My family and I were invited to have dinner with Santa at Meadow Brook Hall and a magical night it was.

First off, Meadow Brook Hall is located in Rochester and was the home of the Dodge and Wilson families.  Matilda, widow of automobile pioneer John Dodge and her second husband, lumber broker Alfred G. Wilson built the 110 room 88,000-square-foot, Tudor-revival style home.

Much of the home is inspired by English manor houses of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries that Matilda and Alfred traveled to on their architectural tours of England.

Meadow Brook Hall was completed in 1929 at a cost of nearly $4 million.

Powered by Whrrl

Dinner consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and corn.  Dessert was a piece of chocolate or white iced cake with raspberry glaze.  The wine glasses on the table were filled with grape and apple juice for the children…it was however “their” evening and the special details were fitting.

The real excitement was Santa and the funny balloon making clown that traveled from table to table entertaining the children.  My girls had a great time making this an event we will probably add to our holiday traditions.

After dinner we took a tour of the magnificent home in all it’s splendor.  Each room had an exquisitely decorated Christmas tree and on each tree was hidden a pickle for the children to find.  At the end of the tour, once all of the pickles were found, the children got a prize.  This was a great way to entertain the children during the tour.

We had a wonderful evening as a family that was both special for the children as well as for the adults seeing the excitement in their faces.

I recommend if you are a Rochester resident, a resident of metro Detroit or traveling to the Detroit area, that you visit Meadow Brook Hall and see a huge piece of American history.

We went for the first time last year and will continue the tradition as long as we live in or near Rochester.  There is nothing remotely like the Big, Bright Light Show and going makes the most excellent way to kick off the holiday season!

The holiday light show kicks off Monday, November 30, 2009 at 7 p.m. to Midnight and goes through January 3, 2010 running from 6 p.m. to midnight daily.  I really wish it would run until the snow starts to melt because it is such a wonderful sight!

There will be Nutcracker Soldiers, Carolers, Santa’s Workshop, Candy Land, a tree lighting and so much more.

Last year Santa and Mrs. Clause were there to great the children and have their pictures taken.  Bring your camera for many photo opportunities and bundle up!  The wind made it very cold last year as well.

Hope to see you there!

Dr. Meri in Rochester is an Excellent Dentist

October 1, 2009 by Courtney Velasquez

Barclay Dental

You don’t have to take my word for it, but Dr. Meri is one of the best dentists and has the nicest offices I’ve ever encountered and I’m a picky patient!

I don’t expect anyone loves to go to the dentist, so when you do go, a pleasant experience is nice.  Especially when, more than likely, you are only visiting every 6 months for routine cleanings and check-ups.

The first thing I noticed about Dr. Meri’s office is the staff.  They are well put together and extremely nice.  They make you feel like you are their number one priority, which is how things should be, and they are always in a good mood.  One way a business can achieve an excellent customer service rating is to leave work at work and home at home.  Dr. Meri’s staff are experts at this important example of customer service.

Dr Meri's Staff

This was my third visit to their office and the staff is consistently all smiles and very professional.  My first visit was right before I had my third daughter.  I had my teeth cleaned, but could not have x-rays done because I was pregnant.  My second visit was to pick up a teeth whitening kit that I had ordered before I had my daughter, but could not use until after she was delivered.  Every visit thus far has been great!

The second thing I noticed was how pretty the decor is and how yummy the office smells. The office looks brand new and is decorated in a light, clean and modern fashion.  They have a small play room for the kids and flat screen TV’s in all of the rooms.

They really have their act together in Dr. Meri’s office!

During the cleaning the hygienist set up a princess chair for my 3 year old and positioned my baby’s stroller so she could see what was going on in the room.  Then she asked me what cartoon stations I allowed my daughter to watch, which I thought was very thoughtful and considerate, and turned the flat screen TV to a station that would entertain my toddler.

After my cleaning and x-rays Dr. Meri looked at my teeth and mouth and then at my x-rays.  He was viewing my x-rays on his computer… very hi-tech!  He took me on a tour of my mouth and said everything looked great.  Then the hygienist told my daughter that she could choose a couple of toys from the treasure chest because she was so patient during my appointment and then proceeded to not only send me home with a toothbrush and toothpaste set, but also gave my three year old and 9 month old a toothbrush to take home too.

It’s probably funny to hear this, but we really had a great time at the dentist office!

Thank you Dr. Meri and staff for providing excellent customer service and making a normally unpleasant event very pleasant indeed.
