In 2004, Motorola released the first RAZR flip phone, and it quickly became one the fastest-selling phones of its time. The Droid RAZR is the third RAZR phone Motorola has released. It is a higher-end phone willing to take on any other smartphone on the market.

When you think of the RAZR name, you think of a super-slim phone, and this one does not disappoint. Measuring just 7.1mm thick (compared to 9.3mm for the iPhone 4s) and weighing just 127g, it’s very light yet manages to feel extremely solid. Typically, when I think of slim and light, the first thing that comes to mind is fragile. Such is not the case with this phone. The Droid RAZR proves that thin is no longer frail. To protect the phone from daily abuse, the Droid RAZR features a Kevlar fiber (the same thing they use for body armor!) backing and scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display. The phone also has a water-repellent coating that protects it (including its inside components) from spills.

Even though the RAZR is one of the thinnest phones on the market, it doesn’t skimp on features. This phone has a beautiful 4.3-inch screen that spans much of its length and height, and the display is both luminous and crisp. The 4.3” Super AMOLED advanced display (960×540 resolution) on the DROID RAZR rivals resolutions found on most LCD HDTV’s! The one thing I did not like about the screen and the size of the phone is the difficultly involved for one-handed use. With a smaller screen (say 3.5”), you can easily thumb through the whole screen without needing to adjust your hand position.

The phone comes with two cameras: one front-facing and one rear-facing camera. The rear-facing camera is an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting in 1080p format. The camera takes excellent photos and videos. The RAZR’s camera app comes with an excellent panorama mode that allows you to “stich” six shots together to get a great panorama shot. The front-facing camera is 1.3 megapixel and capable of shooting video in 720p format. The camera certainly doesn’t disappoint. It is one of the better front-facing cameras I have seen.

The RAZR comes with a 1.2 GHZ dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM that will handle just about any task you throw at it with ease. There is little-to-no delay when browsing Motorola’s custom user interface based on the Android operating system. Loading the apps and games on the phone is quick and snappy. The phone also features an HDMI port to connect it to your HDTV or anything else that accepts an HDMI input. This phone is also on Verizon’s 4GLTE network. As I stated in my previous reviews, Verizon’s LTE network is FAST! It is just as fast as many home networks, with speeds in the 10+ MPS range. Storage for the phone comes in the form of 16GB installed internally as well as a pre-installed 16GB microSD card. That should be plenty for the average day-to-day user. However, if it’s not enough, you can upgrade the microSD card to 32GB.

The battery life for the phone is average. I have seen both better and worse. However, battery life on a dual-core phone featuring the LTE network is typically poor. Both features use A LOT of power. So to say that the battery life is average is not such a bad thing. One thing I would have liked is the ability to remove the battery. Motorola decided not to allow this, which means no spare battery and no chance of a larger battery. Also, in full disclosure, I must say I did have one problem with the phone charging. One day, after the battery died completely, I tried to charge the phone from my laptop, and it would not charge at all. I also tried charging it from the desktop with no luck. It did, however, charge once I plugged it into the wall. Once it did charge, I was able to continue charging it from my computer. I am not sure why this happened, but I did some research and found that I was not the only person with this problem. Hopefully, Motorola will have this fixed in a future update.

The Droid RAZR comes with the typical apps you would expect from today’s smartphones. You probably won’t use some of them, but others are useful. The mobile hotspot app is always welcome, especially when you are on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. You’ll also find QuickOffice, which allows you to open, view and edit your Office files. Motorola also offers a ton of accessories for the RAZR, but unfortunately, the company did not send any for me to review with this phone (hint, hint).

All in all, the RAZR is a great phone for even the most demanding smartphone user. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a feature-packed phone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The RAZR has some of the best Android hardware I’ve seen in a long time. It’s incredibly thin and has great build quality.

Don’t miss your chance to help Artic polar bears and win some fantastic prizes. Coca-Cola and Walmart have teamed up for an exciting cause: raising awareness and funds to keep the Artic polar bear’s habitat protected. Melting sea ice and habitat loss represent serious threats for the polar bear. With the goal of ensuring the safety and longevity of these bears, Coca-Cola created the Artic Home project and put its money where its mouth is.

Coca-Cola has pledged a generous starting donation of $2 million to the World Wildlife Fund, but you can get in on the cause by purchasing an exclusive Coca-Cola Arctic Home 28 pack from Walmart. Once you have your 28 pack, just visit Artic Home (or send a text) to enter the code found on the packaging and make a donation. Coca-Cola will match each donation, increasing its total pledge by up to $1 million. Together, we can make a difference for the Artic polar bear. Let’s make sure the polar bears get the benefit of the entire $1 million by the March 15, 2012 deadline!

But wait, there’s more! To help further awareness of the Artic polar bear’s plight, Artic Home is providing a virtual experience through which you and your family members can learn more about these beautiful animals, see their habitat, track real polar bears, and get real-time data on Artic conditions. Then, just visit ArcticHome.com/Walmart and enter the code found on the packaging of your Coca-Cola Arctic Home 28 pack to win a $100 Walmart gift card to spend as you wish. One lucky person will win every hour through December 31, 2011.

Get in on the action right now by entering Detroit Mommies’ “Bring Home Happiness” Holiday Reader Giveaway for your chance to win an amazing gift pack valued at $115. The lucky winner will receive:

Who doesn’t like to show their school pride? It’s even better if you can do it with style. Take a look at this great line of sterling silver beads that are made in Michigan. The Collegiate Bead Company offers beads with the licensed logos of nearly 150U.S. universities, colleges and sororities, including just about everyMichiganUniversity. Collegiate Bead Company, based inRoyal Oak, makes hand finished sterling silver School Beads that fit Pandora, Chamilia and other popular charm bracelet styles.

This product makes people say “why didn’t I think of that?” It’s a great idea – a modern way to show your school spirit. The beads are high-quality hand finished and would make an excellent gift.

Not only is it a great product, but there is also an interesting story behind the company. The owner, Dave Showalter, discovered the market niche while recovering from brain surgery. An e-mail from a customer of his family owned jewelry store that wished him well also inquired about sorority beads fitting Pandora or Chamilia charm bracelets. He scoured the Internet and found no such product. From there, Collegiate Bead Co. was born.

When I make my annual wish list for Christmas gifts I tend to go for items I would not normally buy myself. I go for luxury over practical items. I make the most of “wish” when choosing what I want.

For example, I might request a top of the line Kenmore dryer that I don’t really “need”, but would love to have to replace the dryer I have now. It’s a wish, a want, even a desire, but since my current washer and dryer are “fine” it would be a luxury for me to get one. Kenmore knows homeowners want convenience along with style, ergonomic design and ease of use. They have stainless steel refrigerators that provide ice and filtered water through-the-door, ranges with sensors that control the cleaning process, dishwashers with anti-bacterial cycles, microwave ovens that cook with waves of radio frequency and washing machines that fluff clothes at the end of the cycle. They are the creme de la creme of appliance brands.

Kenmore is a brand available exclusively through Sears’ 870 full-line department stores, retail outlets and a variety of online offerings accessible at the company’s Web site at www.sears.com.

What other brands does Sears carry that are exclusive?

Sears has a long list of brands that are exclusive to Sears. Kenmore, Craftsman, DieHard, LANDS’END, JACLYN SMITH, JOE BOXER, apostrophe, COVINGTON, COUNTRY LIVING, BONGO, BEVERLY DRIVE, Canyon River, Everlast and Sofia by Sofia Vergara to name a few.

Win It!

A Sears gift card valued at $100!

Entry Requirements

Go to Sears.com and choose an item from the brands listed above that you’d like to have for Christmas?

One of my biggest regrets from my time spent with the Chevy Traverse was that I did not have a chance to take it on a road trip. When General Motors contacted me about driving their new 2012 GMC Terrain, I wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice! As chance would have it, one my daughter’s top-choice colleges in Chicago was having its fall open house, so we packed up the car and headed out for a quick road trip.

I’m guessing that GMC chose the name “Terrain” for this vehicle, because it is a crossover SUV designed to handle different types of – um – terrain. In all honesty, off-roading was not the first thing that came to mind when I first saw this vehicle. Don’t get me wrong, it’s tough looking – like it could boss the other SUVs around on the playground – but it was stylish, both inside & out. The model I received had a carbon black metallic exterior with chrome trim & chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The interior featured jet black leather seats with red accents. The red trim was very nicely done, I might add. GMC could have taken it a little too far, making it gaudy, but they didn’t; red stitching and peeks of red on the door panel.

Of course one of my biggest concerns, as a mom, is safety. As usual, the good folks at General Motors do not disappoint. The 2012 GMC Terrain (SLT-2) comes with 6 air bags, anti-lock brake system, Stablitrak stability control system, rear child seat latch anchors, theft deterrent system and 6 months of On-Star (subscription service available after 6 months).

These are all fairly standard in new vehicles these days. There are a few other safety features that really impressed me though, including the passenger sensing system that turns front air bags on and off, based on the weight in that seat. Another feature my husband enjoyed was an improvement to the rear-view camera which, in addition to showing whats behind you, also shows your path of travel; I wish I would have snapped a picture of this because it’s very helpful.

One of the newest safety features of the 2012 GMC Terrain is the Forward Collision Alert & Lane Departure Warning system. It’s a little technological wonder that kicks in, automatically, after you’ve reached 25 miles per hour. It can sense if you are approaching another vehicle too fast, alerts you and pressurizes the brakes in preparation. The lane departure warning uses a digital camera to detect the lane marking and beeps when you begin to veer. Not only this a great safety feature, it also came in very handy for proving that I am a better driver than my husband. Check out the video below:

For comfort & convenience, the Terrain features a built-in color GPS with a 7″ screen, packaged together with a CD/MP3 player, AUX input & USB port, Bluetooth with audio control and power everything, including rear hatch. With heated front seats & remote start, it’s winter ready too.

While we didn’t take it over particularly rough terrain, we did spend a good deal of time on the interstate system between Detroit & Chicago and was very impressed with how well the Terrain minimized being jolted across our famous potholes. The lumbar support also helped make both the driver and passenger comfortable for the long trip.

The 2012 GMC Terrain starts at around $25,000 and seats up to 5 (2 in front; 3 in back). It’s not a truck, but the cargo space was sufficient for my family of 4, including 2 teenage girls that have yet to discover the joys of packing light.

This is another General Motors car that gets a recommendation from Detroit Mommies. Tops in safety, looks & comfort and packed with great features it makes the perfect road-trip vehicle.

Courtesy of General Motors, Detroit Mommies would like to give one of our lucky readers a chance to take a road-trip in the 2012 GMC Terrain too!

Win It!

The DROID BIONIC is the first Verizon Wireless smart phone that features both the 4G and a dual-core processor. What this means in layman’s terms is this phone is ridiculously fast.

In terms of network, I was getting download speeds of over 15 Mbps, though Verizon sites “Up to 12 Mbps”. To give you an idea of how fast that is, the hard-wired Internet in my home office clocked in at 11.41 Mbps. The dual core processor means the phone is very responsive when browsing through and using apps too.

The dual-core processor also means it uses a lot of power and the battery life isn’t fantastic, though it’s not horrible either. With the 4G network enabled, the average battery life is about 8 hours.

The DROID BIONIC feels solid in your hand; very different from an iPhone. Not better or worse, just different. It has a sizable 4.3″ screen with fantastic resolution; great for watching moving, but such a big screen made it difficult for one-hand swiping and navigation.

One cool feature of the Bionic is the “ZumoCast”, allowing you to connect to your own computer and stream movies or music, which can be done over your WiFi connection or 4G network. Setting up ZumoCast takes less than 2 minutes. Once you’ve signed up and installed the app on your computer (PC and Mac compatible), you’ll be able to access your computer’s contents from the DROID BIONIC.

Overall, it’s a very impressive phone with an impressive spec sheet:

Powered by Android™ 2.3.4 Gingerbread

Dual-core 1 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM

4.3-inch qHD screen using scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass with dual-layer anti-reflective coating

8-megapixel autofocus camera with flash and 1080p HD video capture

Front-facing camera for video chat over 4G LTE, 3G or Wi-Fi

MOTOPRINT app to print via Wi-Fi-enabled printers

Mirror Mode with HDMI out (HDMI cable required) supporting 1080p HD video playback

Multi-window options for multitasking with ease when using the Webtop application

Business ready with advanced security policies; resizable and scrollable email, calendar and task widgets; device and SD card encryption; and Citrix® GotoMeeting® and Citrix Receiver™ for Android

Adobe® Flash® pre-loaded

HTML 5 capable

32 GB memory: 16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD™ card pre-installed (actual formatted capacity is less)

Support for up to 32 GB microSD cards

Supports wireless charger

If you’re in the market for a substantial-feeling smart phone with remarkable speed, be sure to look into the DROID BIONIC at your local Verizon Wireless retailer.

Flirty Fashions, a popular Rochester Hills boutique, recently opened its doors at a brand new location in the Mall at Partridge Creek.

Specializing in fun and trendy clothing in both misses and teen sizes, Flirty Fashions carries casual items, formal and semi-formal wear, accessories and outwear too.

Diane, owner of Flirty Fashions, pulled out all the stops for the Grand Opening event last week. Party-goers sampled champagne and cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a chocolate fountain. In addition to the yummy treats, guests indulged in creating their own bath scrubs in ice cream scents such as vanilla mint, strawberry sprinkles and chocolate. A DJ was in the store, spinning great dance music to keep the party hopping too.

Adding to the Flirty Fashions experience, models were hired to pose as live mannequins in the window and through out the store. The models changed looks several times over the course of the evenings and introduced guests to the latest looks and trends.

Take a look at the fun & fabulous styles from the Flirty Fashions Grand Opening Event:

While Flirty Fashions is not a large store, it carries a surprisingly large variety of items that will suit just about every taste and every budget. Whether you need a quick clutch or accessory, a new top & jeans or want to get dressed to the nines, you’re sure to find something here. Their looks are trendy, but tasteful. As a mother of two teen girls, not only would I feel comfortable buying a few items for myself, but I feel confident my girls would love to shop here as well.

The Mall at Partridge Creek is an excellent location for the new Flirty Fashions store. The open, outdoor setting will add to the ambiance of holiday shopping this year. With the wide selection of shops, beauty salons and restaurants, it’s the perfect destination for some “girl time.”

Is this movie a Trick or Treat? It was an excellent Treat! Both my son and I really enjoyed the show. We were lucky enough view an early showing of this movie last Saturday. Puss In Boots will be in theatres Friday, October 28th. The 3D animation really made this movie come to life. The voices of the characters were perfect – Antonio Banderas as the voice of Puss In Boots, Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaw, Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty, Billy Bob Thornton as Jack and Amy Sedaris as Jill.

This fearless sword slashing cat, who sometimes take the law into his own hands or should I say paws, is full of swagger and is cool to the hilt. He seems like such a tough cat but he has a heart of gold. He deals with the likes of the nasty couple of Jack and Jill, plus Humpty Dumpty who turns out to be not such a good friends…..or is he? One of our favorite scenes was the dance fight with the alley cats. Puss In Boots has truly earned his boots!

The movie runs approximately 90 minutes and is rated PG.

Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to the show for reviewing purposes. All views and opinions are my own.

Way before Puss, played by Antonio Banderas, ever met Shrek, our suave and furry feline hero goes on a swashbuckling ride, as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the street-savvy Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs. This Dreamworks Animation SKG movie is rated PG (parental guidance suggested). I think you’ll love this cat with tons of ATTITUDE!
