Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam Returns to Ford Field!

Earlier this month, Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam, with the biggest performers on four wheels, rolled and roared its way through Detroit. Myself and another (brave) mom took our kids and a couple of their friends for an evening of racing, engine revving, and jaw-dropping jumps. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised at what a good time I had – it was really a fun night and the kids just had the best time. One bit of advice though…it is very loud. When you see the guy on the street hocking earplugs for a buck, buy them.

Our favorite was the freestyle competition which pitted monster truck against monster truck in short freestyle routines. Grave Digger, Crushstation, and El Toro Loco (our faves) gave it all they had with massive jumps, car-crushing landings, and everyone’s favorite…doughnuts. You know…where you drive in circles? It was loud and got everyone on their feet cheering as these giants spun round and round, mostly on two wheels!

Annual Fire & Ice Festival in Rochester Starts Today!

This fun annual event starts today!  They have been working on the sledding hill all week to get it ready for the event – when you don’t have snow you just make some!

 

When      Friday, January 25 – Sunday, January 27th

 

Where     Downtown Rochester

 

Each year the Oakland County Parks, the City of Rochester and downtown Rochester come together to host the Fire & Ice Festival, a winter festival in downtown Rochester. Admission to the event is free.   The events include fireworks, taste fest, tube sledding, snow shoeing and cross country skiing, dog sled rides, ice skating, broom ball exhibition, and ice sculptures.

Biggest Loser ~ Buddy Shuh

Contestant, Buddy Shuh shares the triumph of losing 163 pounds while overcoming the grief of losing his baby daughter. Buddy’s spiritual journey is told in his book, The Story of Bella.

Buddy will be speaking as well as selling and signing copies on  at 7:00pm on Thursday, January 17th in the Community Room.

CPL Finals Study Hall

Do you need a place to study for finals? Come to the library to study or work with a group. They will have tables set up in a quiet room for all your studying needs.

  • January 21 — 12:00-8:45 PM in the Purple Room
  • January 22 — 12:00- 8:45 PM in the Purple Room
  • January 23 — 12:00- 8:45 PM in the Community Room

Sylvan Saturdays: Finals Exam Jam

On Saturday, January 19th from 1pm -  3:00pm  you can grab a friend and sign up for the “Exam Jam”. Sylvan teachers will be on hand to offer tips and ideas for improving study strategies and habits.

Attendees will develop a study plan to prepare for school tests and learn specific techniques that will be based on the student’s personal learning style. Exams are coming soon. Attend this program and be ready to rock in the Community Room. YOU MUST REGISTER – as of right NOW 25 seats are remaining!!! So, tell all your children! This is a GREAT opportunity!

3 LEGO Events in Metro Detroit

There are many fun LEGO events scheduled around the Detroit Area.  Here is a quick run-down:

 

Henry Ford Museum – LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambitions.  This exhibit features 13 models of outstanding architecture like the Empire State Building and the St. Louis Arch.  There area also demonstrations and LEGO play areas. The show runs daily until February 24, 2013.  Tickets run $12.50 – $17.  The museum is located at 20900 Oakwood Blvd, Dearborn.  For more information please visit their website: www.thehenryford.org/museum

 

Family LEGO Night – At the Brandon Township Library 304 South Street, Ortonville, MI 48462.  Families can drop in on Tuesday evenings starting January 15th and every Tuesday until March 19, to make their own LEGO creations.  The event is free.  More information about the event can be found on their website:  www.brandonlibrary.org

 

LEGO Creation Day – At the Shelby Township Library.  This event is scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Bring LEGO’s to build your own special creation at the library.
