Michigan’s Only Benched Dog Show is getting ready for the 108th and 109th Detroit Kennel Club (DKC) Dog Show March 3 and 4, 2012.

“We are very excited to present another weekend packed full of family-fun, competition, and of course offering visitors up-close and personal time with the breeders, owners and handlers,” said Erik Bergishagen, President of the Detroit Kennel Club. “Being one of five benched shows in the United States, and the only one in Michigan, is an honor. It brings an element to our shows the public doesn’t get at other shows.”

The two-day celebration of dogs brings more than 2,000 dogs from the 167 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club. Show highlights include new demonstrations, obedience and conformation competition, rare breed exhibits and high flying four-legged competitions. New this year, the DKC welcomes pure bred rescue and the Rock-N-Roll K9 Performance Team.

The DKC shows are a “benched show”, which offers visitors the unique opportunity to meet with the owners and breeders and learn about breed characteristics, temperament, care, health, grooming, history and other issues for dog owners.  When dogs are not in the judging ring, they are required by the rules of the show to be displayed on a bench according to breed, making it easy for spectators to talk to several breeders of a specific dog in the same location.  The DKC Dog Shows are one of only five benched American Kennel Club (AKC) shows left in the United States(Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and New York).  For more information on the show please visit www.detroitkennelclub.com

I always go to see the Irish wofhounds first because I have one and also look for the greyhounds, because I have one of them, too,… a retired racer. Another breed I really want to see but is rarely there is the Glen of Imaal terrier, which someone described once as ” a wolfhound who was left in the dryer too long.”! Love the dog show!!!
