School is back in session! Whether your child attends public or private school or is educated at home, it’s always a good idea to be on the look out for fun ways to reinforce learning concepts. iPhone/iPad apps are a great way to do just that. Since they live right on your mobile device, it’s easy to incorporate learning on the go too.
Of course, the decision to allow your middle schooler to own or use a smartphone or tablet is a personal decision, but we feel that under the right circumstances and supervision, these devices can provide entertainment and educational help!
There are tons of educational apps to choose from, but we’re helping by narrowing down the list to our favorite 5, with the help of a 13 year old Detroit Daughter, currently starting 8th grade. Each of these apps are fun, ‘tween approved, mom approved & FREE!
Painless Grammar Challenge: (iPhone & iPad) Based on Barron’s Painless Grammar book, this app includes 3 sets of grammar quizzes. Once your child completes the quiz, scoring 80% or better, he unlocks one of the animated games to play. The downside to this app is that you only get a score; your child can’t see which questions he or she got wrong. It’s still good for review and good clean fun!
Khan Academy PreAlgebra: (iPhone & iPad) We’ve used the free Khan Academy videos to help in our homeschool and couldn’t have been more pleased to find that there’s a companion app too! PreAlgebra lessons are laid out and easy to follow. You can use this as a stand alone resource, or just for extra help for a particular homework assignment.
Lobster Diver: (iPhone & iPad) Don’t be fooled by the name of this app! Lobster Diver is a math app that combines learning with animated games. Developed by mathematics educators, researchers and game developers at the Learning Games Lab at New Mexico State University, this app will help children understand number systems, fractions and ordering.
World Countries All-In-One Free: (iPhone & iPad) There’s a lot packed into this little app! It includes a world countries fact book, maps, flags, 3 types of quizzes & flash cards too! Easy to navigate and use, this app will be a great resource for social studies projects and just exploring.
Flashcards: (iPhone & iPad) The great thing about having flashcards on your mobile device is that you can’t lose them and they’re all in one place! (plus, you can never forget to have them with you). With this app, not only can you download flashcards from Quizlet, but you can make your own too!
These are just a few of our favorites, we’d love to hear yours too. Tell us your favorite educational app in the comments section below!
