Red Oaks Sizzler BBQ Battle

Think you’re an expert in grilling the best BBQ ribs? Put your skills to the test at Oakland County Parks and Recreation’s first Red Oaks Sizzler BBQ Battle.

Competitors must use wood or charcoal to be eligible to win. Bourlier’s Fireplace and Barbeque Supply in Ferndale donated two grills, worth $800 and $670, for the first and second place winners. The first place will also win a Texas Roadhouse gift certificate. The third place winner will win a Hickory BBQ and Lazy Bones Smokehouse gift basket.

Entry fee is $25 per team.

“I want people to come out and talk to barbeque competitors, find out what their secrets are and get some ideas for what they can do at home,” Jeremy Brown, assistant park supervisor, said.

Team check-in and meat inspection is from 7 – 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. The battle begins at noon for spectators, who get in for free.

There are many activities for the spectators such as barbeque vendors, kick ball, Lincoln Logs, Legos, face painting and inflatables. Hudsonville Creamery is providing free ice cream to the public, and Madison Heights Fire Department will attend the event, allowing kids to use a small hose, climb on the truck and try on a firefighter’s uniform. Patrons can take part in a water balloon contest and three-legged race to win a free waterpark pass.

Sam’s Club and MegLo Painting and Cleaning are also sponsoring the event.

“It’s a great family event. We’re going to have some great food. It should be a great time,” Brown said.

Red Oaks County Park is located at 29601 John R. Road in Madison Heights.

The deadline for registration is Friday, Aug. 12. To sign-up, call 248.424.7076 or visit DestinationOakland.com.
