Howell Opera House and MainStreet Winery host Speakeasy Night for the Big Read

As part of the Howell Carnegie District Library’s month long Big Read Program featuring The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, The Howell Opera House and MainStreet Winery will host a Speakeasy Night on February 12.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.  Libraries across the country applied for a grant to participate in the program and can choose a book from a list of 30 on which to focus their program.

Howell Carnegie District Library chose Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon because of the areas love of mysteries.  Most of their Big Read planned events are mystery-centric and early 1900s-themed.

Speakeasy Night will begin at 6:00 p.m. at  Mainstreet Winery, 201 W. Grand River.

Wear your long pearls, boa’s, zuit suits, flappers & fedoras.  Music from the 20’s will be playing all evening, prohibition signage will be out as to not tip off that wine will be served during this event in coffee cups. The password to get in is “Joe sent me”.  The evening is sure to be a hoot!

The Accoustic Cafe portion featuring Pete Fetters Band starts at 7:30 at the Howell Opera House, 123 W. Grand River.  Tickets are $5.00.
